Sen'Ther

Sen'Ther hunters fly fast fragile ships and risk their lives on crude fold jumps.

The Sen’Ther learned to fold without an AI core.

They are an avian species, evolved in the thin upper atmosphere of a gas giant, comfortable with three dimensions in a way most spacefaring species never quite achieve. Their ships are light, fast, and fragile — built for acceleration, not endurance. Sen’Ther pilots think in trajectories the way most species think in language: fluidly, instinctively, without calculation.

Behaviour

The Sen’Ther are hunters. Their culture evolved around pursuit — of prey, of storms, of the horizon. Fold travel was not an engineering breakthrough to them; it was a hunting technique. They developed a crude fold drive that skips rather than steers: short hops, unpredictable destinations, high risk. It kills most pilots who attempt it. Those who survive become the Sen’Ther elite.

They are territorial but not expansionist. A Sen’Ther clan claims a volume of space — often a nebula, a dust cloud, or a sparse system — and defends it with the tenacity of a species that evolved to never lose a chase. They do not build gates. They hunt between stars the old way, and they look down on species that need infrastructure to travel.

Relationship to the Ancients

The Sen’Ther encountered Ancient ruins before any other successor species. Their fold-hunting technique was reverse-engineered from a damaged Ancient navigational core — one that had lost its human consciousness substrate but retained its fold geometry. The Sen’Ther never knew what they were copying. They built their entire culture around a partial print of human technology, and they are the only faction whose fold signatures can, under the right conditions, track Vann.

In the field

A Sen’Ther ship moves differently. It does not fly in straight lines. It pulses, checks, folds short, repositions — a pattern that looks erratic to gate-trained pilots and reads as tactical artistry to anyone who survived a chase. They prefer one-on-one engagements, high speed, minimal warning. If a Sen’Ther wing is in your system, they are hunting something. It is advisable to ensure that something is not you.

The short fold they open mid-fight is the same drive, the same spiral, the same drain on the capacitor as a system jump — they have never built anything else. Watch for the spiral and you get the same half-second of warning a fold always gives; a Sen’Ther that just hopped is running the same capacitor math you are, and cannot do it twice in a row for free. It rarely lands where it means to, either — expect it behind you as often as beside you. That unpredictability is the whole hunt. When Sen’Ther travel in a clan pack, only one closes and folds; the rest hold the ring and watch, so the chase stays one-on-one even when the wing isn’t alone.
