Black Holes
Black holes drain your speed inside their gravity wells and punish a careless approach.
You will hear pilots call the Veil hole a wall. It is not a wall. A wall you bounce off. A black hole simply takes your speed away and does not give it back until you leave.
Every hole sits inside a gravity well: a sphere roughly three times as wide as the glowing disc you can see. Cross that line and your drive starts losing the argument with spacetime: the deeper you push, the lower your effective top speed, sliding smoothly down to about five percent right at the event horizon. Your engine still burns at full strength. It just stops mattering.
What that means in the seat:
- You cannot fly into a black hole. Not won’t. Can’t. You stall against the well long before the horizon, hanging there burning fuel like a fly in syrup. The hole does not need to kill you; it only needs you to stay a while.
- Getting out is a crawl, not a burn. Point away and thrust. Speed returns gradually as you climb. The last stretch to the well’s edge feels like wading ashore. Impatience changes nothing; the well doesn’t check your throttle.
- The well is honest. No damage, no pull toward the center, no surprises. Distance in equals crawl out. Watch your speed readout bleed as you approach and you know exactly how deep you are.
- Everyone stalls alike. Pirates, militia, haulers, you. Some crews use the well as an arena: drag a fight in deep and nobody runs. Some use it as a moat. Think about which side of that trade you’re on before you cross the line.
The bright accretion disc is not a flat ring. A thin photon ring hugs the event horizon; the near edge of the disc cuts across the hole while the far edge arcs up and around the dark silhouette. Those ghost arcs are still the same disc, not a second object and not a safe boundary.
Look closer and the hole shows its manners. Starlight grazing the photon ring bends around it — a faint smear of sky pulled toward the horizon, not damage to your canopy glass. The disc itself never lights evenly either: one flank runs bright, almost white-hot, while the other dims and reddens as the spinning material catches up with or falls away from your sightline. Pretty to watch. Tells you nothing you can fly by — the well doesn’t care which side you’re looking at.
Veil wears more than that bright disc. Its surrounding gas reaches across a far wider patch of sky, but the distant nebula stays calm and unwarped. Only when gas enters the hole’s near capture region does it bend into tightening spirals and accelerate toward the horizon. That is gas falling, not your ship: the gravity well still does not pull your hull toward the hole. It only caps your speed as described above.
Rule of thumb: if the accretion disc fills your canopy, you are already paying the toll. Fold in, do your business at a respectful distance, and leave the deep well to the research posts and the reckless.
